Les Misérables - The Schools Edition

A MID-WINTER MUSICAL 2006

As part of our continuing series of workshop programmes, Alexander Productions decided to stage A Mid-Winter Musical for the 2006 Mid-Winter workshop. The best of Australia’s up and coming school aged stars were auditoned and individually selected for four exclusive performances of a brand new production of Les Misérables - The Schools Edition. Written by composer Claude-Michel Schönberg and librettist Alain Boublil, Les Misérables is set in the Parisian underworld and is the story of ex-convict Jean Valjean and his attempts to start a new life, and make the world a better place, during a time of acute social upheaval.

Four sell-out performances were staged at the Parade Theatre, 215 Anzac Parade, NIDA Kensington on July 14 (Bastille Day) and 15, 2006. Over 80 cast members had the opportunity to work with leading industry talent including George Torbay (Musical Director and Conductor), Kate Gaul (Director) and Jeffrey Castles and Rachel Kelly (Musical Repetiteurs).

Designed by Tobyiah Stone Feller, this new production of Les Misérables attracted much attention with its edgy and unique sets and "innovative and explosive" direction by Kate Gaul. Most of the cast were on stage for the entire show and the piece clearly won over its audience by not only its cutting edge interpretation but by its fierce sense of ensemble.
